Anorexia nervosa

Eating disorders affect millions of people every year. Anorexia nervosa is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. Someone with anorexia has a fear of gaining weight and presents with an extremely thin body shape from severe starvation.
  • 15% of women ages 17 to 24 have an eating disorder
  • 40% of teenage females have eating disorders
  • More than 90% of female teenagers have tried some form of dieting to control their weight
An eating disorder often affects our teenage years because our bodies are going through significant changes during puberty. Everyone goes through puberty at different times and we all develop and grow differently. Our body shape may change as we mature and it is important to remember that it is a natural part of life. We should not compare ourselves to our friends or people we see on TV or in magazines and we should be supportive of our peers. Anorexia and other eating disorders can have life threatening effects if we do not seek help. Please watch the video below for a life lesson on anorexia.

  2. Great video. This subject is very important and something that many people do not think about. Although I am a male, I have known women with eating disorders and I think it is important to bring this issue to the forefront. I feel it is an issue that has to be addressed from multiple angles. I also believe that it first starts at home and needs a strong support system. Women and girls should be made to feel proud of their bodies. Misinformation should also be pointed out as just that and good nutrition and exercise information should be provided so that good, healthy choices can be made if someone chooses to.

  3. I liked this post, I am currently doing my research methods proposal on anorexia. I was severely underweight when I was younger mostly due to the constant sports I played and being a picky eater. I would see all my friends who were normal weight and be so jealous of them, but they would constantly tell me they wanted to be skinnier and I never understood why. I think it is super important to take steps in preventing this illness, because it can be extremely detrimental, but also preventable.
